What Is the Industrial Electricity Price?
The Industrial Electricity Price reduces the electricity price for power-intensive companies to EUR 50/MWh in the years 2026 to 2028 – for up to 50% of electricity consumption at a given point of delivery. All companies whose industry code (WZ code) is listed in Annex 1 (Sub-list 1) of the KUEBLL list are eligible.
In return, at least 50% of the aid received must be reinvested within 48 months in decarbonization or flexibility measures. These measures may also be implemented by third parties. If companies invest in specific measures such as battery storage, they additionally receive a flexibility bonus of 10% on the aid – further increasing the funds available for reinvestment.
Battery Storage: The Most Attractive Investment Option Under the Reinvestment Obligation
Companies can strategically use the reinvestment obligation to finance battery storage projects – without any additional capital requirement of their own. This creates three advantages at once:
1. High returns: Battery storage systems generate revenue through automated electricity trading and balancing power. In 2025, revenues reached up to EUR 212,000/MW (RWTH Aachen, Q1 2026), corresponding to total revenues of EUR 4.2 million for a 20 MW storage system with 4 hours of storage capacity.
2. Attractive Business Case: A battery storage project achieves a significantly higher NPV than alternative reinvestment options.
3. Strategic Future-Proofing: An on-site storage system creates the flexibility that is becoming increasingly important economically due to the upcoming capacity-based grid fee reform (AgNes).
A Concrete Worked Example
A company with 100 GWh of annual consumption at one point of delivery can receive more than EUR 5.6 million in aid over three years. At least 50% of this must be reinvested in decarbonization measures. If invested in a battery storage system as a flexibility measure, an additional EUR 0.561 million can be applied for as an investment grant. With an appropriate capital structure, the funds to be reinvested can be used to finance a 20 MW / 50 MWh battery storage system.
The result: an NPV of EUR 10 million over an 18-year operating life at a WACC of 12% – compared to an NPV of only EUR 4 million for alternative reinvestment options.
The business model is remarkably simple: the storage system exploits price fluctuations in the electricity market and receives compensation for providing balancing power – fully automated and independent of ongoing operations.
